how to store matcha

It's high time we address a question that seems to be hot on a lot of customers' minds: What exactly is the best way to store matcha, and how do I know when my matcha isn't fresh anymore?

How to tell when your matcha is fresh (and when it isn't fresh anymore)...

While different varieties of matcha vary widely in color and in taste, fresh, properly stored matcha should be a vibrant green and smell slightly vegetal.

If your matcha has a slightly dusty or hay-like smell, it's most likely not at its freshest. This doesn't mean that it can't be used, but simply means that somewhere down the line, it hasn't been stored correctly.

A bit like old spices, old or worn out matcha won't harm you, and matcha can't really "go bad" (nor does matcha expire per se), but you will notice a difference in its taste and its over all freshness, which will feel duller and less vibrant on your palette.

EXPERT TIP: If, when you buy your matcha, you want to see what it will look like when it's not fresh anymore, leave a teaspoon of matcha powder on in the sun for the day, and see the way in which it reacts to light.

The best way to store matcha...

Matcha is ideally kept sealed in its bag or in an airtight tin in a cool, dark environment like a refrigerator. If properly stored, your bag of Maru Matcha tea powder should last about two months in your fridge before it starts to become less fresh.

EXPERT TIP: If you're a less frequent matcha drinker, you can also store your matcha powder in the freezer - just like coffee.

How to travel with matcha...

If matcha is best kept in the fridge, how are you able to travel with it? While it's not a great idea to leave your matcha tea languishing on a kitchen counter for weeks, it does make a great travel companion. Matcha doesn't "spoil", it just becomes less fresh (still irresistible, but slightly less so), so travelling with it (even unrefrigerated) for up to a week is not going to affect its quality.

Knowing your supplier...

Matcha is a tricky product for companies to keep fresh, as it doesn't like warmth very much, and prefers to be kept in the dark.

At Maru Matcha, we go to lengths to make sure that our matcha arrives from our Japanese suppliers in Japan to your door with perfect freshness. Tasting is believing. You can pick up our matcha right on this website, or if you prefer pick up a bag of BIO Matcha 100g Aus Uji Japan - Für Grüntee-Latte, Coldbrew Matcha, Smoothies, Backen. 0,16/Portionthrough our friends at Amazon.

    Hi Janet,

If matcha is stored correctly (sealed in a cold, dry, dark environment), then it is possible for it to last up to 2 years. If you’ve already opened your matcha and it’s been sitting out for a while, chances are that it has probably lost the best aspects of its taste and color. Old matcha is like old spices: it’s not that it will make you sick if you use it, but you probably won’t get much in the way of taste. I hope this helps!
