I still remember my first office temp job, crammed into a receptionist's desk at a nondescript office. Few details of this brief, strange period in my life remain, but one sticks out as clearly as yesterday:
This office, like so many millions of others, took the communal coffee pot very, very seriously.
8 minutes of my 10 minute cursory introduction to the office was spent on coffee pot etiquette. Other than the fishbowl of jellybeans permanently perched on the edge of my desk, the office coffee pot (and the army of personalised mugs for each employee) was both the centre of the office and the single most important object in everyone's day.
And hey, why not? It was a busy place. We all need a pick me up, right?
Sure, except, like me, I'm pretty sure that most of the office was going through permanent caffeine withdrawal.
I just wish we'd known about back then. Here's why:
5 reasons why matcha will make your work days amazing:
1) Work for longer without a caffeine re-up
In coffee and soda, caffeine is released quickly into the bloodstream, which means that it hits you quickly then runs out abruptly, leaving you feeling tired, cranky, and overdrawn. The powerful amino acid l-theanine in matcha green tea on the other hand, helps the caffeine in matcha to be released more slowly, meaning that you'll feel energized for longer (up to 6 hours) without the need to re-up on more caffeine. L-theanine is unique to tea, but found in particularly high levels in matcha!
2) Think faster, more clearly, and more precisely
EGCG, the catechin antioxidant found abundantly in green tea (and particularly in matcha green tea powder) is known for its potential anti-aging and disease prevention properties, but one study published in Science Daily also proposes that the EGCG in matcha improves both object recognition and spatial memory while combating both short and long-term memory loss.
3) Multitask more efficiently
In a study published in the journal Nutritional Neuroscience, a combination of caffeine and l-theanine (as found in matcha) was found to improve both the speed and efficiency of cognitive tasks and "attention switching" (or multitasking) activities, with "reduced susceptibility to distracting information . . . "
4) Use up fewer sick days
Matcha contains as much as ten times the antioxidants as regular brewed green tea, which is great news for your immune system. The antioxidants in matcha, namely EGCG (or Epigallocatechin gallate) have frequently been found in studies to boost our immune systems and help fight the daily pollution that we deal with living in busy urban centres.
5) Avoid distractions more efficiently
A study published in the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows that L-theanine can also have fantastic effects on our ability to focus by increasing "alpha brain wave activity", a state which is associated with feeling calm yet alert. In turn, l-theanine in matcha also helps us to stay focused and maintain attention on the task at hand.
