How we started

Maru Matcha began from our years of working in hospitality, where we first introduced matcha drinks over seven years ago. Back then, hardly anyone knew what matcha was - let alone ordered it. As people became more health conscious, matcha slowly started gaining the attention it deserves.

In 2022, we opened Mibo Bakery, our sister brand, and that's when we really started digging deeper into the culture, history, and craft of matcha. What began as a curiosity grew into a full obsession, eventually leading us to connect directly with farms in Japan.

Our mission

Maru Matcha officially launched in July 2025.

Our mission is to bring high-quality, authentic matcha directly from farms in Japan to New Zealand. We’re committed to honoring the deep cultural roots of matcha, from its centuries-old traditions to the craft of its production. We hope to create meaningful connections between our community here and the people and practices behind each cup.

Launching at AKL Food Show 2025

We launched Maru Matcha at the Auckland Food Show 2025 and it couldn't have gone better. Over the four days of the event, we sold more than 1,000 matcha drinks and completely sold out of our launch products. We had so much fun connecting with many matcha lovers like us, and introducing matcha to so many people trying it for the first time. We honestly couldn't have asked for a better way to kick things off.

We also hosted a workshop at the Auckland Food Show, and to our surprise, all 8 sessions sold out super quickly. It was such a special chance to share what we've learned from our visits to Japan — from the farmers, craftspeople, and passionate people who dedicate their lives to matcha. We were so excited to pass on that knowledge, along with some fun recipes for everyone to try.

Pop Up events all over Auckland

From the bustling streets of Newmarket to the sun-drenched afternoons at Basque Park, our recent pop-up series across Auckland was all about connection. Our collab partners includes: Mibo Bakery, Bustle, Flight Coffee, Butter Baby, Mii studio and much more.

Whether we were collaborating with our friends in the Uptown business community or hosting our week-long pop up shop, our goal remained the same: to share the matcha rituals we love.

It was a joy to showcase our latest blends, catch up with old friends, and introduce the world of matcha to so many new faces.

What's next for us?

Returning to our roots, with a fresh perspective in 2026.

This year, we’re going back to where we started. We are incredibly excited to join the Christchurch and Wellington Food Shows, expanding our community beyond the city limits. Each stop is a chance for us to showcase our ceremoial grade matcha, share our latest drink creations, and exchange ideas with local partners. Whether you’ve been with us since day one or are just discovering our matcha, we can’t wait to meet you there.

Creating our own space

Our pop-ups have been incredible, but we’ve been working on something even more special.

We’re officially in the final stages of preparing our own physical space right here in Newmarket, Auckland. We wanted to create the perfect ‘third space’, that essential middle ground between home and the business of work or study. It’s a place to slow down, explore the roots of matcha, and reconnect with yourself and your community.

Think of it as our home away from home. We can't wait to welcome you to Maru’s House.
